“Ballou”
Center for the Performing Arts
1:00PM
Welcome to Ballou High School in southeast Washington, DC, where there's no air-conditioning in the bandroom and many of the music teachers are former graduates who have volunteered to give something back. Ballou is the story of the school's marching band, and their attempts to life the spirit of a community through music. It's a truer to life version of Mr. Holland's Opus, with the students' hopes and dreams of winning a championship represent a downtrodden community's struggle to overcome its disadvantages. The footage of practices, following the band up and down the streets of the neighborhood as they are cheered on by residents, gives some meaning to the old African proverb “it takes a village.”
